What does your qualification level mean?

Certificate IV:

Graduates at this level will have theoretical and practical knowledge and skills for specialised and/or skilled work and/or further learning

Certificate IV is based on more sophisticated technical applications involving competencies requiring increased theoretical knowledge, applied in a non-routine environment and possibly involving team leadership, management and increased responsibility for outcomes.
A person achieving a qualification at this level would be able to:

  • demonstrate an understanding of a broad knowledge base incorporating some theoretical concepts
  • apply solutions to a defined range of unpredictable problems
  • identify, analyse and evaluate information from a variety of sources
  • identify and apply skill and knowledge areas to a wide variety of contexts with depth in some areas
  • take responsibility for own outputs in relation to specified quality standards
  • take limited responsibility for the quantity and quality of the outputs of others.

Diploma:

Graduates at this level will have specialised knowledge and skills for skilled/paraprofessional work and/or further learning

Your knowledge and skills are broad, deep, and complex enough for planning and initiating alternative approaches to applications across a broad range of technical and/or management requirements, evaluation and coordination.
You can set the direction of how you apply your knowledge and skills, with substantial depth in some areas where your must exercise judgment to plan and select appropriate equipment, services and techniques for yourself and others.
You might participate in developing strategic initiatives, as well as take personal responsibility and autonomy for doing complex technical operations or for organizing others. You might participate in teams, including teams doing planning and evaluation. You might be coordinating a team.
Some diplomas emphasize of breadth of knowledge and skills, while other emphasize depth.
You can:

  • show you understand a broad knowledge base incorporating theoretical concepts, with substantial depth in some areas;
  • analyze and plan approaches to technical problems or management requirements;
  • transfer and apply theoretical concepts and/or technical or creative skills to a range of situations;
  • evaluate information, using it to forecast for planning or research purposes;
  • take responsibility for your own outputs in relation to broad quantity and quality parameters; and
  • take some responsibility for the achievement of group outcomes.

Advanced Diploma:

Graduates at this level will have broad knowledge and skills for paraprofessional/highly skilled work and/or further learning

Your knowledge and skills are broad, deep, and complex enough to analyze, design, plan, execute and evaluate work across a range of technical and/or management functions, including the development of new criteria, applications, knowledge, or procedures. You can apply a significant range of fundamental principles and complex techniques across a wide and often unpredictable variety of contexts in either varied or highly specific functions. You can contribute to the development of a broad plan, budget or strategy and take accountability and responsibility for yourself and others in achieving the outcomes. You can show significant judgment in planning, design, technical or leadership/guidance functions related to products, services, operations or procedures. Some diplomas emphasize on breadth of knowledge and skills, while others emphasize depth. You can generate ideas by analyzing information and concepts at an abstract level. You have a command of wide-ranging, highly specialized technical, creative or conceptual skills. You are accountable for your personal outputs and group outcomes within broad parameters.

Vocational Graduate Certificate

Graduates at this level will have broad and coherent knowledge and skills for professional work and/or further learning

The Vocational Graduate Certificate involves making significant, high level independent judgments in major, broad or specialised planning, design, operational, technical and or management functions in varied or specialised contexts.
A person achieving a qualification at this level would be able to:

  • demonstrate self-directed development and achievement of broad and/or specialised areas of knowledge and skills building on prior knowledge and skills
  • initiate, analyse, design, plan, execute and evaluate major, broad or specialised technical and/or management functions in highly varied or specialised contexts
  • generate and evaluate ideas through the analysis of information and concepts at an abstract level
  • demonstrate a command of wide ranging, highly specialised technical, creative or conceptual skills in complex contexts
  • demonstrate responsibility and broad ranging accountability for personal outputs
  • demonstrate responsibility and broad ranging accountability for the structure, management and output of the work of others.

Vocational Graduate Diploma

Graduates at this level will have advanced knowledge and skills for professional or highly skilled work and/or further learning

The Vocational Graduate Diploma involves making high level, fully independent, complex judgments in broad or highly specialised planning, design, operational, technical and or management functions in highly varied or complex contexts.
A person achieving a qualification at this level would be able to:

  • demonstrate self-directed development and achievement of broad and/or highly specialised areas of
  • knowledge and skills building on prior knowledge and skills
  • initiate, analyse, design, plan, execute and evaluate major functions either broad and/or highly
  • specialised within highly specialised or complex contexts
  • generate and evaluate complex ideas through the analysis of information and concepts at an abstract level
  • demonstrate an expert command of wide ranging, highly specialised technical, creative or conceptual skills in complex and/or highly specialised or varied contexts
  • demonstrate full responsibility and accountability for personal outputs
  • demonstrate full responsibility and accountability for all aspects of the work of others and functions including planning, budgeting and strategy.
